Communication Skills at Starbucks

My favorite Starbucks here in Denver is located at Bellevue and I-25. At 8am in the morning this Starbucks is loaded with clients, music in the background and lots of people talking…would you really have a serious business meeting at this time of the morning? A young lady came in and put name cards on the table so the meeting was obviously planned. She sat in front of these 6 participants and was pointing to a hand out that no one could see-let alone hear her.

This went on for about ten minutes- the rest of the folks did not have a copy of the handout-do you blame them for looking a little bored?

I’m a fan of having meetings at informal locations but please pick your time and place carefully so everyone can appreciate what you are trying to convey.

I agree. You can’t keep them up with coffee alone. A more conducive environment could add a bit of excitement for everyone.

Steve,

Fascinating, and what a good use of visuals as well. It looks like you walk your talk…I would imagine any piece of information you share about presentations HAS to include something about “the look and feel.” From the picture you share with us readers, I can assume that people looked, and felt, a certain way.

Of course, to presume HOW they felt would be too much (from me). All I know is that I feel not as on, or as comfortable, when the environment I am meeting in is distracting, loud, and otherwise un-conducive to performance.

Thanks for giving me some more ideas…good reporting!

Thanks Jason, I was pretty amazed! When your audience members look that disengaged you may as well stop your presentation and ask them what you can do to make it more advantageious to them-because you have definitely lost them!!
